Tacoma Personal Trainer Isaac here, today let’s talk about how to set goals that EXCITE you!
When we set goals I’m GUILTY of this and you probably are too, we set them for ONE of TWO reasons:
A. You HAD to
B. You knew you where SUPPOSED to
That’s why it’s no surprise that less than 8% of people achieve their New Years Goals in an article found in Forbes. When I was a kid having to do something was the worse feeling ever, and when I did put the energy forth to do something like let’s say…do the dishes, I never did it with enthusiasm. In fact, sometimes I didn’t even do a very good job and my mom would wake me up at two am to come upstairs and clean the sink with scrubbrite. Talk about a rough life.
Yet, most of us set goals and then try to keep up with them and end up like that, someone has to drag us or pester to get started or start back up with them.
Fixing The Goals That Don’t Motivate Us
One of the Mindset Coaches I study always talks about “EMOTIONAL JUICE“. Too often we plan things with no “EMOTIONAL JUICE” we say them because we think we should or have to.
In fitness I find this so often when a new personal training client comes in and says, ” My goal is to be toned” or “my goal is to lose ten pounds“. That’s fantastic, I understand that but they’re never EXCITED about it.
A goal with “EMOTIONAL JUICE” is something that when you say it out loud gets you excited! You can picture it in your head, you feel stronger and more committed just saying it.
Here’s a goal of mine with NO Juice:
“I want to do a handstand”
Here’s one WITH Juice:
“I want to be a badass gymnast and shock people with how amazingly strong and kick ass I am when I can not only lift weights but balance my body over my head and make it look effortless”
That’s way more powerful, which one do you think saying out loud before I started practicing would get me more excited about training with my Gymnastics Coach?
Here’s one more example before you go and set your own Goals with Emotional Juice, no Juice below:
“I want to be healthy so I can live a long time”
” I want to see my daughters grandkids and be so fabulously strong and healthy that I see myself on a Sunny day picking them BOTH up in my arms as my whole two generations of family marvels at how amazing and their Grandma is!”
NOW THAT’S INSPIRING
I’ve been setting goals for myself with my girlfriend and I realized they seem like a giant long list of things…learn this, learn that, go workout this many times a week, but none of those got me excited instead I felt even more overwhelmed. Until I thought about what I was doing wrong. I fell back into the habit of making a todo list and setting goals that didn’t have any JUICE behind them.
