Tacoma Personal Trainer Explains Why The Easy Life is Overrated

1. Life Should Be Hard Because You Adapt to Whatever Happens to You

It’s your friendly Tacoma personal trainer taking a relaxing Sunday to share some thoughts with you. Here’s the truth. Good things can’t happen to you all the time, if they did when adversity comes you wouldn’t know how to handle it. If there’s one thing I’m used to by now it’s adversity. I swear I’ve run into more problems than you have time to listen to and they used to wipe me out like a wrecking ball. One particular career related incident on my way to to becoming a Tacoma personal trainer took me three months to recover from. I was depressed. One relationship related issues took me six months before I could listen to a song and NOT cry from it. One family issue left me with nightmares every morning for several years.  It was horrible but the more tragedy I encountered he faster I recovered. There’s something called the SAID principle. You’ll want to take notes on this because it applies to more than just exercise. The principle is one they use in Physical Therapy and Strength training that simply means whatever you do your body will adapt. As Darwin says it isn’t the SMARTEST or the STRONGEST organism that survives it’s the one that ADAPTS!

If you have a stressful things happen to you you will adapt to them. Sometimes you have a very bad things happen to you and it takes more to recover from. That’s what workouts are based around. How in the world does tearing down muscles and pulling, pushing, and picking up heavy objects end up being good for you? Because the negative affect forces your body to adapt in some way. Now if you sit on your couch and eat chips that’s not a stressor, that’s on the other spectrum, ridiculously easy and your body shows it. It looks like it hasn’t been stressed in years. Let’s go one step further.Like I said earlier this week in our newsletter the key to life is ” Consistency”. It has nothing to do with being lucky. Successful people will tell you, ” The more I practice the luckier I get”. That’s life.

Tacoma personal trainer talks consistency

If you impose a demand to yourself but then wait before you expose it again your body has no idea how to adapt. It doesn’t remember. That’s why you need to train consistently because if you don’t your body is not adapting. Life is all about adapting to your situations. You either change yourself or you change your environment.

2. You Can’t Change the Environment until You Change Yourself

The most valued people in the world are those who change the environment of the people around them. The President of the United States is important because his decisions change OUR environment. Steve Jobs was important to a lot of us because he changed our environment. You can’t walk around without seeing a iPhone or ipad anywhere, even on my flight back from New Jersey I saw multiple elderly people with iPads, and I don’t even have one ( I take gifts by the way)! Steve Jobs changed our environment. Why do people love to watch sports at bars or friend’s houses in the company of others? The environment! People love sports because it changes how they feel, what they focus on, that changes their environment. Starbucks makes a ton of money because it’s everywhere affecting our environment.

So do you CHANGE your environment or do you ADAPT to your environment? That’s why association is so important. One thing that helped me think about who I spent time with was instead of thinking these people are my “friends”, I thought these people are my ” review board”. I’m going to make as much money as them, I’m going to be just as happy as them, and I’m going to be just as healthy as them. Would I want this person on my “review board?” If I wasn’t allowed to make my own decision, I had to present them to my “review board” would I really want the decision they would make?

Thinking like that will change your perspective on who you associate with. Who’s on your review board?

Friday I saw one lone eagle on my way to the gym. He was flying by himself. The eagle is strong, sure, and powerful. It doesn’t need to fly with ravens, seagulls, and pigeons. Eagles fly with Eagles and not other birds.

Tacoma Personal Trainer Loves the eagle

Before you can change your environment you have to change yourself. You have to literally ” Be the change you see in the world”. A famous quote but what is that quote really about? Change yourself before you try to change others. You can’t change your environment with what you don’t have. You can’t give something you don’t possess. So how you do you change yourself? It starts with being aware of what you do. As Aristotle says, ” We are what we consistently do”. That’s why one hard workout does nothing for you. There are 52 weeks in a year. If you worked out for 45 of those weeks three times a week 135 moderate ( not crazy) workouts in a year will make you someone who consistently workouts. That’s the magic. If you want something, figure out the habits and consistently do them. The reason why most people aren’t happy. They pick the wrong things to do and consistently do those and they unhappily look at what they want in life as something that’s  out of reach, unattainable, or even worse… “just not realistic” .

Eating one salad instead of pizza does nothing for you. Eating a salad 3 times out of 5 instead of pizza does.

3. Tough Times Never Last but Tough People Do

I’m sure you’ve heard of the book. I didn’t read the book but I can tell you just reading the title of the book makes me smarter! The hard times will determine your character. The truth is most people don’t have a big enough reason to change. That’s why the first thing we talk about at my gym is what is your why? Why are you going to wake up earlier? Why are you going to eat well when everyone else eats poorly. What’s your why? It’s something that most people never talk about and the number one most important thing before you even think about starting any Tacoma personal training program or boot camp. I’m a movie buff and I love the movie 500 days of summer. What an amazing flick. Tom wasn’t really into the greeting card business but somehow he “ended up there” the truth is where you are is exactly where you deserve to be depending on what you’ve done, haven’t done, or reacted to what was done to you. No one “ends up” doing something they don’t love everyday. They let it happen to themselves. When I was in New York I met this incredibly beautiful girl who was a friend of an old client of mine. Her grandfather used to sing her Mariachi songs when she was a little girl. I never got to hear her sing but she said she had a very deep Mariachi sound to her voice. When she decided she wanted to sing for her passion and career in life the first school actually kicked her out of their program because they didn’t know how to place her. They told her she ” wasn’t what they were looking for”. She kept on and found another school who was amazed at her sound and appreciated what made her unique. Now she books shows easily and seems to fit into every part because what others told her made her not fit for the industry made her stand out. I was so proud of her when she told me that story. Perseverance, knowing who you are, what makes you special, and not letting something as devastating as being told you’re not fit to even go to school didn’t stop her is what tough people do. Now she’s crushing life and I know she’s going to continue to do amazing things.

Tacoma personal trainer is proud of this girl!

4. Hard Times Make You Appreciate The Easy Times

I have hard times and I purposefully make some things in my life more difficult. Why? Because I  get excited when it’s hard because I know when it’s hard most people will quit. I won’t quit and that means I’m going to have what others won’t have. This last few weeks have been difficult for me but instead of thinking about how I should be unhappy and slip back into what I did back then when life would get hard  ( sleep and play video games all day), I decided I needed to change myself. So I changed my entire day. One routine I added was 30 minutes of playing piano because I want to be able to hear a song in the morning,  getthe sheet music, and learn it in 30 minutes ( I was pretty close to this in high school after 8 years of practice).

One of my goals is to bless the world with happiness or what some might call “positive energy”. I can’t give others what I don’t have. So before I go to bed I make a list of everything I’m thankful for. In the morning I get up and make another list of everyone I’m thankful for and I take the time to send them a personal message, pray for them, wish blessings on them, and let them know they’re in my thoughts. You are what you consistently do and I want to be consistently blessing people, positive, and change the environment around me. The more I think about how I appreciate things the more I realized all the good things I have and it makes the hard or bad things look a lot smaller.

Tacoma personal trainer is all about gratitude

You don’t have to start as big as I do. Before you do something that is part of your routine maybe watch TV, read a magazine or paper, drink your coffee, or whatever it is you may do. Take a second and say out loud three things you’re thankful for and three people you’re grateful for in your life. What you’ll probably find is you have so many great things to be thankful for. By doing this you’ll change and “adapt” into someone who is happy and making others happy.

I’m going to share a few days worth of gratitude so you can see how this builds into my life and how it could change yours.

Remember, you’re in control of what you do, what you don’t do, and how you react to what’s done to you.

BeFit,

Isaac

Alycia Meridth for being such a great help to me and taking so much time to learn and help me so I can focus on the big picture. Your responsiveness to my every message, attention to detail, focus, and most importantly people skills are so appreciated I can’t express.

Robert Blackett for being an amazing friend, training partner, motivator, and example by helping make BeFit Tacoma what it is. Most people don’t know that most of what you see in the gym Robert did for us from cutting, hanging, errands, you name it he did it. He has never said no and he has never not showed up for a workout. He is an eight out of ten in everything he devotes himself to and his mastery is displayed in his focused aspects of his life.

Rocky Bisogno for being my early wake up call. After going to bed and sleeping so little I didn’t think I’d be able to wake up at 5 am but knowing you were waiting to talk to me got me up.

Meredith Miller for being the BeFit angel and keeping the place clean. Thanks for showing up no matter what, dedicating so much of your time, and coming back through the door to go the extra mile to get rid of those foot steps. You don’t know how much I appreciate you and what you do on a daily basis that no one sees. Truly I could not do it without you. You are a BeFit MVP.

Rebecca Kay Sprague for being a boss and instructing semi-private clients when I had to step out to help make some legacy things happen. Teaching rep ranges, intensity, supination, and explaining longevity in a training program by being realistic and doing what you can, as well as still showing up when you were feeling “Nap Time” and doing intervals after. I’m so proud of you and so happy you did learn a thing or two with your time hanging out with me.

Laura Heistand Call for being such an amazing coach with an emotional quotient I cannot explain. For taking the time to talk to me about my day and teaching me so much about how to be. I know you think I teach you things but I learn something from you every time you open your mouth or talk to a client. I think ” Man, I’ve been missing the boat” that’s how you should relate to people. You truly inspire me to be better.

Kari Wallen for cracking me up in boot camp and always bringing a smile to my face. I see a big difference in your body already and I appreciate that you stay the course even when it gets hard and maybe others who came in with you initially have switched to different class times. I truly cannot wait for your transformation and testimonial because I know it’s going to be one of my proudest ones yet! I’m proud of you already!

Your daughter Taylor who uses the same fb account. For cracking me up and reminding me that sometimes I miss being a kid and talking about how people who text with the word kewl are not so cool.

Mike Robertson for your podcast with Dean Somerset and Greg Everett that I listened to while driving today. For providing me with great information I learned from while I drive from Gig Harbor to Tacoma. Thanks for providing value to my life that I can chip away little by little to become better with your podcasts.

My piano teach Kathy Strickland for drilling into me the fundamentals of fingering, counting, and encouraging my expressiveness so today I was able to play the Chopin Prelude I heard on pandora and express my feelings. Thanks for all your patience so that today I could take 30 minutes aside and express myself in a way words do not allow me to.

Martin Rooney for the Train to Win book so I can spend 30 minutes a day in the morning reading and taking notes to learn more about all the beautiful thoughts on life, success, principles, and purpose consolidated into one spot for me to share with those around me.

The things that were on the other half of the gym got cleared out this afternoon and now it’s GO TIME! Time to transform BeFit closer into the vision I have to touch the lives of the people around me.

With so many things to be thankful for I can only say I am blessed and I am grateful for my life and opportunities.

I agree, Laura. Wonderful read. Gratitude is something that changes the cup from half empty to half full. You do continue to inspire, Isaac. 🙂 I’m so very grateful that I bought that deal in December and became part of the BeFit Family.

Thanks Laura and Michelle! You two are some of the most positive people I know and I don’t think you know how much you bless my life and how just waiting for you both to show up and hang out with me at BeFit makes my day so great! I always think about what you could pay me to do something I don’t love and the answer is there isn’t enough money for me to spend five days out of seven spending it with people who don’t inspire me, somewhere I don’t make a difference, doing something I don’t care about! I care about both of you and I’m so proud of the changes you make and continue to make! Michelle! I need to get an updated after for the BeFit wall!
